PROFILE DATA DISAPPEARS 3z6wj

As Lawrence Abrams of Bleeping Computer reports, some Windows 10 1909 s who updated KB4532693 said their profile data was gone.

Bleeping Computer spotted various reports on the Microsoft forums. They all report missing files on the desktop and a reset Start menu. Here is an example of comments posted:

Hello.  Sorry to post a random question here, but a bit new at this.  Just installed the latest Feb 2020 Windows 10 updates.  Upon completion it appears to have reset the display to default windows system.  That is, all custom icons missing, background returned to windows logo, would not recognise my logon, set a temp logon. ”.

A BUG IN THE RESTORATION OF THE PROFILE DURING THE UPDATE 65b2g

In view of the elements reported by the various s affected, the update KB4532693 seems to load a temporary profile usable during the update process without restoring the original profile after installation.

One thing is certain, the original data is not lost or deleted. They are simply in the original folder which is itself renamed with the extension mask .000 or .bak, in the directory C: \ s. However, profile restoration can be complicated and risky, as it would involve modifying the Windows registry. The solution we recommend is to uninstall the problematic update if you are affected by the bug. Microsoft has not yet reacted officially to the problem, but the deployment of a patch is possible in the coming weeks.
